If a classic dress is chosen, and paired with the right accessories, a dress can be worn to an fancy evening out, a casual dinner date, a semi-formal work function, professional office place or even shopping, The best way to save money when buying a dress, is to look for a dress that can be flexible. Flexible means flattering, classic, the right color, fabric and the right style. This article will focus on those aspects of buying a woman's dress.

A flattering dress should be flexible in terms of adding accessories as well as fitting correctly. Buy a dress too large and it will sag off your shoulders and look unprofessional and messy. Additionally, a too baggy dress will look unkempt with certain belts or blazers. A dress is most flattering when it fits properly. The shoulder seems should reach just to the end of the shoulders. Each of these colors are the basic colors which function perfectly through winter, spring, summer and fall. Additionally, red, green, blue and purple can be worn if in the mid to dark ranges of the color wheel, but they are not ideal. Avoid whites and pastels as they are only functional during spring and summer, though occasionally can be worn during fall. In order to get the most wear of a dress, it's best if the dress is plain colored so as not to attract attention if worn more than once in the same week.

For style and fabric stay away from trends and stick with polyesters, rayon, silk and worsted wool. Basic fabrics, such as those, will be flexible year round. Plain cut dresses are the best options for wearing with numerous accessories. Avoid trends with style and fabrics as well.

Belts, scarves, gold or silver jewelry, brooches, watches, hats and blazers can all accessorize a dress enough that mixing and matching with a plain dress, can enable a woman to wear the dress as many as 3 times in a week.

In this age of enlightenment, how come we still call them women's dress shoes?

Sure, most of the time we wear our women's dress shoes with a dress, but more often than not we also wear them with our tailored trousers, business suits and jeans. But we don't call them "tailored trousers shoes" do we?

And how come we're still wearing those four-inch stiletto heels, when we know how hard it is to stay out of the cracks in the pavement, even in our flats?

Don't you think we might have learned a lesson by now? The. . . damn. . . things. . . hurt. And they also damage our spine, calf muscles, cause bunions and other equally gross malformations of our feet.

But if Sex and the City taught us anything about the ways of the world in the 21st century, it was that Carrie looked smashing in her Manolo's as she ran, yes, ran, down Park Avenue to meet whichever gorgeous hunk she was schtupping at the time. The moral of the story being "Yes girls, your designer dress shoes will always get you your man!"

So here are my not-so-serious tips on how to have a wardrobe full of fabulous women's dress shoes:

*Make the shoe salesperson your "new best friend". He or she is going to be part of a very, very special relationship - you and your new dress shoes.

*Forget comfort when you've got class! Look at those things! Don't you just have to have them? Regardless of the fact that they feel like you've got metal clamps on your toes? Anyway, you can always sit down somewhere after an hour or so, well, can't you?

*Remember cost does not equal comfort when shopping for designer dress shoes. If they cost two months' salary, they're worth every bit of the pain.

*When trying on your dress shoes, check how you look from every angle - sitting, standing, lying face down or up -- yes, you'll need to know how you look when you're flat on your back after falling off your 4 inch spikes.

Far be it from me to postulate on learning nothing from our forefathers (oops, I mean mothers!), but as long as Mr Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo, and assorted other grand masters of shoe design keep making designer women's dress shoes (there's that phrase again) that are simply to-die-for, well, bunions be damned, I'll die for them!

Women have worn dresses as their main style of clothing, throughout history. While the dress styles have changed, one thing has remained; the dress is still the main representation of women and femininity. Women moved away from wearing dresses, as the main clothing style, starting in the 1960s, when the jeans explosion began and the women's revolution took hold. The 1960s were also filled with capri pants, giving women even more choices away from dresses and skirts. Towards the end of the 1960s jeans and pants were being worn more often than dresses. Today there is a surge of women's dresses popularity. While women still wear jeans, shorts and other forms of clothing, dress popularity is on the rise.

The rise in the popularity of dresses can be attributed to the new vintage dresses popularity, as worn by Katy Perry and Dita Von Teese. But more than just those two Hollywood stars, dresses are being flaunted by all TV and movie stars. Finding womens dress slacks that fit is challenging at any age, and more so for the post-50 figure. Let's start by agreeing that most of us want slacks that give the impression of a long, lean leg. This rules out any design element that breaks the smooth movement of the eye from waist to ankles. For example, horizontally placed pockets on the derriere of jeans draw the eye across the widest part of our bodies.

If you are short, you especially want to avoid horizontal stripes, cuffs, or a chain belt low on the hips. A vertical pinstripe is the only print worth considering for women's dress slacks. It creates the ultimate illusion of a long, lean vertical line. Pinstripes have the added benefit of looking chic in almost all business situations.

Avoid flowers, geometric prints, plaids, all-over embroidery, and just about every other kind of print. Even all-over tonal prints make our hips and thighs more expansive by catching and holding the viewer's gaze. Slacks that hit below the belly button are not appropriate for business wear, no matter how many times we see this in the mass media. No and no and no.

When ordering online, I often order two sizes in the same color. It's worth the return postage to try on garments in the comfort of my home. The alternative is driving from store to store, desperately hoping to find something I want that fits and is affordable.

Here are some tips for fitting your slacks:

* Sit in the pants. Do not sit on gingerly on the edge of a bench in a fitting room. Sit d-o-w-n. The fabric should not not bind or feel tight anywhere - waist, crotch, and upper legs.

* Visually, women's dress slacks should appear to hang from the waist.

Avoid horizontal lines. For pants and jeans with pockets on the back, look in a three-way mirror before buying. The waist line around your body should be parallel to floor. The waist tends to dip lower across tummy if one is overweight.

If your stomach creates a pooched-out front, look for slacks with a single or double-pleated front. If nothing can be done, cover up with a tunic blouse or long jacket. It may be worth your investment in time and money to find a seamstress to make one or two perfectly fitted work pants. A quality fabric, such as wool, cotton blend, or silk, should last many years. I take good care of my dry-cleaning only, professional wardrobe by removing these garments as soon as I come home from the office.

* Length: For long slacks, there's two rules. First, don't drag the hem all over the floor. You must not be able to accidentally step on your own pants. Second, you should be able to see only the barest hint of the top of the shoe when you walk.

It is acceptable to see the toe of your pointy-toed cowboy boots when wearing slim-legged sports pants. The inseam is the length of the pant from the seam that extends inside the leg, from crotch to hem. When purchasing women's pants online, knowing your inseam is essential.

Fabrics: Avoid fabrics that will radiate wrinkles from the crotch when you stand. This is called binding, and it means the pants are too tight or the fabric is inappropriate. A touch of Dacron, polyester, silk, or Spandex will prevent cotton and linen from wrinkling. Spandex and other stretch fibers have the added benefit of enhancing the trouser fit.

In sum, the best-fit women's slacks strive to achieve an unbroken eye-line from waist to toe. Do not buy anything that's too tight or readily shows wrinkles. Take care of your investments in quality garments, and you will enjoy them for several years.

Bahrain and Iran - Women's Dress

When I lived in Bahrain in the late 1970s and through the 1980s, I thought Muslim women were steadily evolving away from the covered heads and black cloaks (abayas) of earlier decades. I almost never saw someone with a veil over her face.

True, the Khomeini Revolution forced Iranian women back into black covering from head to foot, but even in Iran, faces-without the forbidden makeup-were unveiled.

When I returned to Bahrain in 2006, after 16 years away, I found the changes in dress startling. Not more modern, as I would have predicted in the 80s, but distinctly more traditional. In the malls, almost all women wore the ankle length black abaya, but its style had changed. No longer a cape that covered the head and extended over the body, the abaya had transitioned to a black, ankle-length dress, supplemented by a black head covering that often included a veil over the face.

Although former students told me that many of the veiled women were from Saudi Arabia, now easily accessible over the causeway that connected the two countries, many Bahrainis dressed the same. "Why the change?" I asked in every conversation.

Diverse explanations were proposed, but all centered on the fact that Muslims felt their faith to be threatened, and dress became a way of affirming their Muslim identity.

Some suggested that the Khomeini Revolution, the Afghan-Soviet conflict, or the Gulf War of 1990 had triggered the concern. Others proposed that the changing role of women, with much greater involvement in higher education and employment, led them to choose conservative dress to demonstrate that a change in life style was not a rejection of the faith.

I returned in 2009 wondering if the trend toward traditional dress had intensified. It had not. Perhaps not enough time has passed for a definite conclusion, but my impression is that fewer women veil their faces and the abaya has become a more fashionable outer covering. The cover picture for my book was taken this year and although most of the girls wear an abaya, it is not the traditional sleeveless cape. Wide, embroidered sleeves are clearly visible. Most of the women wear a black scarf over their hair but in the background are several with uncovered heads and no abaya. This is also what I observed on the street and shops.

Unlike Iran or Saudi Arabia, Bahrain has no laws regulating women's dress. The pressure to conform to what others are wearing, felt by women everywhere, has a major role in determining dress in Bahrain. Probably the choices are more complex there because of the tension between religiously backed tradition and newer trends that assert a changed role for women.

Both Saudi Arabia and Iran have laws governing woman's dress. I had little direct experience with Saudi women's dress on my recent trip, but I spent nearly two weeks in Iran.

As I planned my Iranian trip, I remembered the dress restrictions inaugurated by Khomeini in 1979 and imposed by harsh treatment of women who protested. With this in mind, I borrowed an abaya with sleeves and packed several scarves to cover my head. Although I saw similar garments in rural provinces, I was out of step in the cities, where the women have largely abandoned the ankle-length chador (abaya). The new style is a knee-length, fitted coat-dress worn over pants. Far from shapeless, this manteau is often cinched with a wide belt, producing a rather modern and stylish look.

Other restrictions enforced in the early Khomeini years are also gone. Make-up is universal, and although a scarf is required by law, inches of hair show on all women except those in official positions who wear a uniform black scarf that fits smoothly around the oval of their face. No faces are veiled.

I eventually abandoned my efforts to dress inconspicuously. When I did not wear my borrowed abaya in the cities, I was left with my usual cotton pants and long sleeved shirts. Provided my head was covered, these were perfectly acceptable by Iranian law, but the light colors I normally wear drew attention in a society where women universally wear dark colors. Under a navy blue manteau, an Iranian college girl might wear blue jeans, but the overall effect is dark.

This is not true for school girls for whom pastels are the rule. I saw many girls, aged perhaps 7 to 14, as they left school or were on their way home and all wore pants covered by a knee length tunic with a head covering of the same color. Each school had its distinctive color. Pale blue and pink seemed to be popular choices. Are light colors considered suitable only for children, with darker colors indicating maturity? I could only observe.

Muslim women in all countries dress in compliance to the Islamic mandate that their bodies be covered from neck to ankles. Although Bahrain and Iran are close geographically, women dress quite differently. My tentative conclusion, based on limited time in these two countries, is that women's dress in the Middle East is diverse and evolving. Women like a guy who dresses well, we can take this as a fact. First of all, remove any preconceived notions you may have that you need to be head to toe in designer wear to be considered a "good dresser" because that just isn't true. Its also true to say that what looks good on one guy may not look as good... or good at all, on the next guy. So why is this? Simply put, we come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Not only that, but its kinda cringe worthy when you see old guys still wearing Abercombie and Fitch just about as much as it is when you see a chubby guy who's been working out a few weeks and squeezes on a tight shirt to show off his "pythons" and manboobs, sorry "pecs" in.

Lets say you are a big guy, by big i mean fat. Your first priority is to get in shape. Being lean says quite a bit about your character; It gives women the impression you are a man of self - esteem and value your appearance which means you are a man of self worth. It also shows you are goal driven and determined as you persistently workout and that you are, dare i say it? Sexy!. Yes, just like us guys look at girls bodies and think about what they look like naked women do the same. So work on your stamina, big guy.

Ok, enough of the drill sergeant act. Being big around the waist doesn't mean you can't pick up women, it just makes it a little harder unless you have tight social-proofing (if you don't know what social-proofing means refer to my confidence article - part 1). Wearing a black shirt will instantly make you look slimmer, add a sports jacket to that an you'll look like someone of authority. It's worth mentioning here that it's not just the clothes you wear but HOW you wear them. I will go in depth into this more in a future article on body language, but its worth noting that you should have your shoulder blades back and chest up. This isn't to say you over exaggerate and walk around like Mr. Incredible but it keeps you from slouching and walking with level shoulders and your chin up says dominance, a man with prowess - and that to women is attractive. For fat guys shirts or sweaters with horizontal lines are a no no, they will make you look like a walking globe so avoid this at all costs.

So what if you are big but muscular? All to often big muscular guys will try to show off their physique by wearing clothes from Baby Gap. My friends, the only people you are attracting wearing clothes a size or two too small for you is gay guys and other guys who work out. The best way to dress if you are muscular is by wearing tapered, slim fitting clothes that show the shape of your physique but leave mystery to it, for instance; a slim fitting cashmere sweater with dress pants and nice shoes accessorized with a decent watch will have womens attention for sure. Guys with decent physiques benefit from the exuberating confidence of knowing they have a decent body which actually attract women more than the physique itself. So leave the tank tops and lycra shorts in the 80's fellas.

On the opposite end of the spectrum we have skinny guys. Skinny guys who wear baggy clothes look like walking hangers, stop that. Skinny guys can potentially look good in anything other than clothes that make them look frail. So stick to slim fitting designs, and perhaps layer your outfits and experiment with what you like. Don't be afraid to look a bit funky and add your own unique style and flare.

To co-ordinate the colors of your clothing here is a simple rule of thumb; Earth colors go together, don't mix them up with loud colors such as red. Match 2 pairs of clothing together for instance; Tanned shoes match a tanned sweater with a black jacket that matches black jeans. Just look for things that co-ordinate and don't wear more than 2 or 3 colors in one outfit if wearing earth colors, just keep it simple.

Don't be afraid to let your personality shine through with the kind of clothes you wear. Self expression through how you dress is a great thing. Personally I'm a fan of artistic designed t-shirts and sweaters with a good fit in the day and smart dress and shoes in the evening. I hope to cover some of the key issues of buying used clothes online such as private sales versus online stores, the use of PayPal and other forms of payment, purchasing through eBay and non-eBay auctions or non-auctions alike, online classifieds and more all in the hopes that you will benefit from some of the things I've learned and avoid the mistakes that I as well as others have made.

First of all let's talk a bit about where to find used baby clothes online from private sellers. There are some areas on the web which allow you to post used clothing ads such as eBay and classified sites. Some classified or "for sale" sites are even specialized in either family or baby related items. eBay, for those of us who are familiar but not necessarily all knowing about it, is a giant online auction with items being posted constantly in all possible fields and topics. Those selling can choose to list their items in an auction format in which the sky's the limit. Bids can start as low as one penny or they can choose to invite people to purchase the items out right by using a buy now feature in which they set a price for their items. As a general rule the buyer pays all shipping costs on top of the selling price and most payments are made through PayPal, which I will cover later.

Baby clothing on eBay tends to be mostly new with or without tags attached and is either sold in batches of items known as "lots" (grouped by gender and size) or individually as outfits. Since I am focusing on used baby items let's discuss those. Batches of baby clothing on eBay tend to get bid very high as there is a seemingly large number of people wanting to buy in this way and very few meeting the demand. I have found that items and batches of clothing of any note on eBay tend to sky rocket in price above what is reasonable for used clothing -- particularly if they toss in a few name brands such as Gap, Osh Kosh, Gymboree etc... and more often than not a bidding war ensues and you are inevitably outbid or worse you get caught up and spend more than you'd originally expected for items you haven't even seen and have no quality guarantee!

Quite often these sites (this doesn't really apply to local purchasing) are riddled with people who are no longer allowed to post on eBay for one reason or another. I can't tell you how upset that made me, and what was worse -- I was informed that three of the items had small stains when in truth about 50 fell into the stained category. There are of course no guarantees with a private seller, no return policy or customer service after the sale is closed and once the sale is complete you must find a new seller down the road when you need clothing again and you run the risks of stumbling across a swindle or a sour deal every time.

One rule to follow in all private sales is to use a traceable method of payment like PayPal. PayPal is a third party which will ensure payment and receipt of product from both parties. Do not use international banks in any online transactions, or any other non traceable forms of payment! So now let's discuss the second option of buying used baby clothes online -- the non private sellers or online used baby clothing stores. There are over 50 stores currently running online who specialize in selling used baby clothing. There are a handful of sites which are a little better for service - for example you do not need to email them detailed descriptions of the items you'd like, mail them a money order or some such and then wait for them to receive it before they even send you the items these sites often have PayPal as an option and some even have shopping carts if a little confusing to use. There are an even smaller number of high service sights who offer credit card payment options, low shipping costs and things similar to those offered by online stores in general. Quite a few of all three levels of sites have quality guarantees for a week or so after you've received your order -- one even offers a full year quality guarantee! Should you choose the more dangerous route of shopping through private sellers with eBay and non eBay sites please take care and remember to never use a non traceable form of payment, don't be afraid to ask numerous questions -- if something seems off in their responses trust your gut -- there will always be another seller.
